Position Requirements Training: A minimum of 2 years of household goods experience with a minimum of 1 year over the road experience in a multi climate setting. Description: National Van Lines Van Operator Job Description, Definition, and Nature of the Work: The work requires physical strength, stamina, and good organizational skills. Hours tend to be long and irregular, and the job may involve a great deal of driving. Moving is a seasonal trade-the busiest months are generally June - September. Household goods van operators load household goods or office equipment onto trucks, transport it to a new location, and then unload it. They may move as few as one or two items or the contents of an entire house or office. Van operators work independently, using their own trucks or vans and must operate within the guidelines set forth by the Federal, state and local regulations, within all 48 states & Canada. Van operators will also be expected to comply with all National Van Lines, Inc. procedures and policies. A van operator's main objective is to transport items without damage. They need to know the best way to pack delicate items such as china, glassware, and mirrors. They may disassemble furniture, such as beds, so it fits through doorways or into elevators. They may place furniture in special containers designed to protect it for irregularly shaped items. Van Operators must also maintain inventories of the items they transport. Van operators are expected to exhibit supervisory skills in managing crews that load and unload shipments. Van operators are expected to practice proper customer service skills and to work with shippers (customers) to resolve any problems that may arise.
